Artist Name: Robert Adams Date of Birth: May 8th, 1937 Personal Background: Robert was born in New Jersey and contracted Polio at age 12. He moved to Colorado in 1952 and went to CU but then transferred to UC Redwoods to get a degree in English. He loved Nature which led him to buy a 35 mm camera in 1963. Style: Robert had a very distinct way of photography. First, all of his photos are in black and white. He specializes in photos of homes and landscapes. His photos are mean to be simple yet very interesting, with lots of hidden meaning. Philosophy: He wanted to show the natural beauty of the earth in his photos. Another main focus of his images were to capture the changing west, especially in Colorado and California. His photos of the new west captured changing cities, new home and businesses that were going in. Influences: I have used his photos in many ways for my work. I use some black and white images which I think looks cool. I like to take pictures of random buildings and objects that have meaning, which is why I chose to study and recreate his images. I think that my photos are very similar to his. I thought this tree represented the image due to the nothingness surrounding the image. The house is also a good image due to the sunlight and how the black and white showed up. My favorite one was the gas station due to the difference in design. It shows how much the world has changed in just half a century. Artist Statement: My images are made to build on his work. Roberts purpose in taking these images were to show the changing country and especially in the west. Now fifty years later, I can show how the world has changed. But at the same time, I am also showing how the world is still somewhat the same with the tree photo.
